I was born out of wedlock in 1953, and raised by adoptive parents in the suburban enclave of New Hyde Park, N.Y., just beyond the reach of New York City. These circumstances color my life in ways I still struggle to understand.
Great stories are often found in the most mundane of settings. I think of Herbert Haupt (above), a presumptive Nazi saboteur, who grew up in Chicago or my own shirt-tail cousin who took an armed-robbery rap for his brother. . . .
Is there anything more joyful than the feel of the open road beneath the two wheels of a touring bike? Certainly not in my experience. Bike touring offers the grace of dancing, the self-reliance of camping, and the conceit that nearly anyplace is within reach.
